There were some major problems with clipping and distortion early on during the first set as the levels were set very high on the master. Because of the degree of distortion, I spliced the first 26 seconds of the first track from the previous seeded source. Early on there is some fairly loud close up yelping/noise. I went through and selectively attenuated regions of clipping and also the intermittent yelping and whooping using Soundforge 6, but it still is at times annoyingly loud. First note or two of Shady Grove is clipped. Word has it that it is also the first Garcia recording by Chuck and Janet Vasseur. It appears that the Neumann model used were 257s. Reviewing the Neumann website I can't find reference to this microphone number (i see 254s-256s), but these were apparently used for all of the Vasseur's audience recordings, so i need to update the db. Portions of this performance are featured in the film "Grateful Dawg". If you do not have this, GET IT by all means. The emotional kick in the gut you will feel from scene 1 take 1 with Jerry on stage at the Warfield alone is worth the price and will bring it all right back. misSHN 3/04.
